EVALUATION RESEARCH PROJECT ON NEW LEASH ON LIFE PROGRAM: 2003

In 1997, Colorado Boys Ranch (CBR) initiated a formal research project conducted independently by Colorado State University. With multi-year funding by Iams Foundation, the research design measured the perceived benefits of animal assisted interventions in therapy and applied learning. In this study, the therapeutic impact of the human-animal bond with mentally ill male adolescent youth in a fully accredited national psychiatric residential treatment and educational center was evaluated. The study involved boys training rescued dogs otherwise destined for euthanasia by pairing the dogs with resident youth who care for them and train them in obedience preparatory to the dogs being adopted by welcoming families. The results of the study demonstrated positive educational and therapeutic gains in the area of social emotional skill deficits.

Submitted by Colorado State University Human Service Assessment Project Research Team – Robert Seiz, Ph.D., Principal Investigator and Lisa Koralewicz, MPH, MSW, Statistician. 2003.
